Delafield, WI – Two Wisconsin law enforcement officers were shot while investigating a hit-and-run early Friday morning.

The alleged gunman has been identified by police as 23-year-old Nathanael Benton, who is also wanted out of Fargo, North Dakota in connection with another shooting, WITI reported.

The attack occurred outside a Holiday Inn near Highway 83 and Interstate 94 after officers were called to a report of a hit-and-run vehicle crash.Sponsored:

Two officers were wounded during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, Delafield Police Chief Erik Kehl said during a press conference, according to ABC News.

Both officers were transported to the hospital and are expected to recover.

One of the wounded officers is from Hartland, while the other is from Delafield, WITI reported.

Benton allegedly fled the scene running southbound.

He is described as a six-foot, 215-pound white male with brown hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen wearing a sweatshirt and a flat-brimmed hat, and may be wearing khakis.

Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

“If you’re in the area you’re going to want to be careful. Maybe just stay home today,” Chief Kehl said during the press briefing, according to ABC News. “Stay inside. Don’t let any strangers in your house. If you see something suspicious, call [police].”Sponsored:

Police have shut down all lanes of traffic near Highway 83 and Interstate 94 while the shooting is being investigated, WITI reported.
